What is the CHESS Study?
The CHESS study is also known as the Children’s Environmental Solutions Study. This study collects data and biologic samples from eligible mother-neonate pairs. It will help researchers to understand whether exposure to toxic environmental conditions are potential risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes. Women participating in the EPOCH study also participate in the CHESS study.
What will I/my baby have to do?
We will discuss the study with you in detail. If you agree to participate, you will review an online consent form and HIPAA form in detail.
Once you agree to participate and sign the consent form and the HIPAA form, you will complete a survey about your exposure to environmental toxins. We will also collect a sample of your urine, and you will be asked to provide a sample of your home water.
Phlebotomy or NCCC nursing staff will be asked to collect a few extra drops of your newborn’s blood on a separate card for research purposed immediately after blood is obtained for clinical testing or mandatory newborn Guthrie card metabolic screening. Your baby will NOT receive any additional heel pricks or blood draws as a part of this study.
Are there any risks?
Study-related risks are low. There is a small chance of bruising, bleeding, or discomfort when we draw your blood, but there are no extra blood draws only for the study. Every effort is made to protect your confidentiality.
Will is cost me anything to be in the study?
There are no costs to participate.
Will I be paid to participate?
You will receive a silicon bracelet, baby hat, and 24-hour parking pass.
